Old Men, Transforming

Perhaps it’s the love

of life, making the difference,

or perhaps nearness

of death’s sure uncertainty,

or perhaps simply

long processes of living

with everyday pains

of grieving, worry, and loss

distilling poets

from the whine of middle age

into this brandy of joy.
